Pet Insurance in Vermont

Vermont MapVermont tops the charts with respect to overall pet ownership in the United States, with more than 70% of households counting a pet as a member of the family, and nearly 50% of homes having at least one cat. However, some Vermonters struggle with the difficult decisions that come with having a furry friend coming down with a serious illness or impacted by a major injury. Because of the rising costs of veterinary care, treatments to extend a pet's life can reach into the thousands; forcing some to choose between having a pet put to sleep or going into deep debt in order to afford that life-saving care.

For example, the most common surgery performed on dogs is to remove a benign skin mass; this is at an average cost of $999.04, with some providers charging more. For cats, tooth extraction happens most often and has an average veterinarian bill of $923.65.

Rather than having to decide between their pets and their wallets, Vermonters can obtain pet insurance to cover a significant portion of their veterinary expenses. Such policies can cover illness, accident, and more routine preventative care, depending on the plan selected. Of course, premiums and deductibles also vary with the amount of coverage desired, so prospective customers should look at the policies offered by a range of companies to find a plan that best meets their pets' needs and their own budgets.

Also, pet insurance providers are not required to cover pre-existing conditions, elderly pets, or all breeds of dogs and cats, so some Vermont pets may have a smaller number of policies available that would cover their individual circumstances. Finally, it might seem like a small detail, but a few pet insurance companies specify that they will reimburse only the amount of expenses that they determine to be "reasonable and customary" for a procedure, often quite a bit less than what a particular veterinarian actually charges; selecting a company that pays a predetermined percentage of covered expenses might be more advantageous in the long run.
