Cost:

Starting from $249

Although you've probably never heard of them, Backyard Discovery has an excellent reputation as a provider of Playhouses and other outside equipment. In business for nearly 30 years, this Kansas-based retailer enjoys an "A+" grade and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau, making them a name to trust when choosing the right Playhouse for your family.

While Backyard Discovery has a more limited selection - just 13 models, 3 of which were out of stock at the time of our review - they make up for it in quality of construction. You won't find any cheap-o plastic designs here. Instead, everything they offer is sturdy, cedar wood construction made to last. On the lower end of the spectrum, you'll find the Timberlake and Columbus Playhouses, priced at $249. You'll find cute details you wouldn't find with a similarly-priced plastic set, like windows and plant holders by the front door.

The most detailed Playhouse offered by this company is the Eagles Nest Playhouse. Sold for $1999, it includes numerous options for fun, including a climbing wall and slide, crow's nest, and even a picnic table shaded by the upper level. Shipping is free on all models.

Whichever Playhouse interests you, be sure to scroll down to get all of the available information about specifications, assembly, and reviews from actual customers. (And, if the idea of assembling your Playhouse is overly daunting, Backyard Discovery does offer options for professional help. You'll find that at the top of the product page, and your price will automatically update to reflect the additional cost when you select "Include professional installation".)

One detail to keep in mind when buying your Playhouse from Backyard Discovery: all of their sets should be sealed once you've finished the build. According to the company, this protects your Playhouse from cracking and splitting - and, more importantly, it's a key component of maintaining your warranty.

The company allows you to return your Playhouse within 30 days of receipt. Keep in mind, though, that you'll be charged a restocking fee of 15%, and that you're responsible for any shipping fees to return your purchase.

We really like the responsiveness of Backyard Discovery's customer service team. We had a question about one of their playhouse products, and we were able to connect with someone via live chat almost immediately.

Backyard Discovery offers high-quality wooden Playhouses with details to delight children of all ages, and their pricing and customer service makes them a company to consider when making your purchase.

WALMART

Cost:

Starting from $19.99

When it comes to Playhouses, Walmart offers about what you'd expect: nothing too expensive or fancy, a wide range of options (just over 200 in total), and the ability to pick up in store on some products.

The most affordable Playhouses sold by Walmart tend to be made of cardboard: castles, cottages, lemonade stands and so on, usually black and white so that kids can color them in. These sell for anywhere from $19.99 to over $70.

In the middle of the pack are the plastic Playhouses. Made by familiar brands like Step2 and Little Tikes, you've got cottages for $99 and up, more deluxe models with slides and sandboxes for up to $722, and several other designs.

Finally, in the wooden Playhouse inventory, you find the designs that have even more features like climbing walls and swings, priced from the mid-$200s up to a few deluxe models like the Pennfield Playhouse DIY Kit for over $3000. The higher-end Playhouses sold by Walmart tend to be offered by third-party sellers, and many of them were out of stock during our most recent shopping trip to the website.

Of course, one of the advantages of buying a Playhouse from a well-known retailer like Walmart is the ability to see some models in-store, pick up in person, or even get free delivery (either to your home or to your local brick-and-mortar location). This doesn't always apply when it comes to third-party sellers, so be sure to look for the part that says "Sold and shipped by" in the product description. While Walmart has a solid return policy that lets you bring you Playhouse back to a retail location, third-party sellers have their own requirements that usually mean you have to pay return shipping costs - and that's assuming they accept returns in the first place.

Walmart is a good choice for an average Playhouse, especially the plastic kinds that you won't find with retailers that specialize in higher-end, all-wood models. You'll know exactly what you're getting, and you'll have plenty of choices for delivery and returns if needed - and you may even be able to see the Playhouse of your choice in store before you place your order.

Continued from above

When choosing the right Playhouse for your favorite children, you want to be sure that you're getting a product that meets your needs. Keep a careful eye on the brand's reputation, the quality of the materials used, and any options for professional assembly when appropriate.

From budget to features, there really are endless options for Playhouses. How can you tell if a retailer is the best choice for your purchase? Here are several factors to guide your shopping decision:

  • Quality. Are the materials for the playhouse as sturdy as you would expect for the price. For example, no one would expect a cardboard Playhouse to hold up in the rain, but a Victorian mansion-style Playhouse should be well-constructed (and probably waterproof!).
  • Reputation. What do other customers have to say about the retailer and its Playhouses? Are there reviews of each available model on the site? Is the company rated by the Better Business Bureau?
  • Cost. When compared with similar styles of Playhouses, is the business competitively priced? Whether you're spending $200 or $20,000 for your Playhouse, you want it to be at the best possible price.
  • Return Policy. If something isn't quite right, can you return your Playhouse? Are there return shipping costs to consider? Is there a satisfaction guarantee in place?
