Cost:

Starting from $4,400

Are you looking for the highest-quality construction in a wooden Playhouse? Is budget not a factor? If you answered "yes" to those questions, consider the options at CedarWorks.

Before you start, however, here's something to know: you'll have to enter an email address in order to see any of their pricing. We found that to be somewhat off-putting, compared with other retailers who show you prices upfront; however, you can enter any email address and still be taken to the product listings with the prices revealed. Entering your email address will also give you access to their free design consultants, wish list tool, priority toll-free number, and exclusive promotions.

CedarWorks offers a total of 26 Playhouses, and they're all listed by product number rather than name. That also makes it a little confusing to shop: what's the difference between an 870 and a 725? That's not easy to tell, compared with something named "Pirate Ship Playhouse" and another called the "Little Flowers Cottage", for example.

No matter which model you choose, you'll find extremely well-constructed Playhouses that probably look very different from the mass-produced models you'll find elsewhere. You'll also find prices to match. Here are three examples among the Playhouses offered by CedarWorks:

  • Playhouse 256: sold for $4400, this (and the 944) are the two lowest-priced Playhouses available. Features include whimsical round windows on multiple sides of the structure, a loft-height rectangular window, and an arched door.
  • Playhouse 471: priced at $8615, this Playhouse offers many more features than the 256. From the firefighter's pole to the Rope'n'Bucket connecting the two stories of the structure, there's a lot more to see and do. There's even a cute wooden flag on the top!
  • Playhouse 767: as the most expensive Playhouse offered by CedarWorks ($28, 450), you're right to expect the most features. This set looks more like three separate models, connected by a swingset, rings, and other items.

CedarWorks lets you customize your color options easily. Choose the button to show color options, and then select from "Lots of Color", "Dash of Color", or "Natural". You can also opt to select your own color accents, mixing and matching as you wish. Most of the color options include red, dark blue, light blue, and green - nothing too flamboyant or patterned.

You can order your Playhouse directly through the CedarWorks website. You'll have to go through entering most of your information in order to find out how much you'll pay for shipping. Expect to pay around $545 for delivery, and 15% of your Playhouse's purchase price in installation fees if you opt for that service.

Although we would prefer to see information displayed more directly on the website, CedarWorks has a good reputation for quality and customer service - demonstrated by their "A+" rating with the Better Business Bureau over more than 35 years in business. If you want a top-quality cedar Playhouse that looks unique in your neighborhood, and you've got the budget to match, you might find something you love at CedarWorks.

WALMART Visit Site

Cost:

Starting from $19.99

When it comes to Playhouses, Walmart offers about what you'd expect: nothing too expensive or fancy, a wide range of options (just over 200 in total), and the ability to pick up in store on some products.

The most affordable Playhouses sold by Walmart tend to be made of cardboard: castles, cottages, lemonade stands and so on, usually black and white so that kids can color them in. These sell for anywhere from $19.99 to over $70.

In the middle of the pack are the plastic Playhouses. Made by familiar brands like Step2 and Little Tikes, you've got cottages for $99 and up, more deluxe models with slides and sandboxes for up to $722, and several other designs.

Finally, in the wooden Playhouse inventory, you find the designs that have even more features like climbing walls and swings, priced from the mid-$200s up to a few deluxe models like the Pennfield Playhouse DIY Kit for over $3000. The higher-end Playhouses sold by Walmart tend to be offered by third-party sellers, and many of them were out of stock during our most recent shopping trip to the website.

Of course, one of the advantages of buying a Playhouse from a well-known retailer like Walmart is the ability to see some models in-store, pick up in person, or even get free delivery (either to your home or to your local brick-and-mortar location). This doesn't always apply when it comes to third-party sellers, so be sure to look for the part that says "Sold and shipped by" in the product description. While Walmart has a solid return policy that lets you bring you Playhouse back to a retail location, third-party sellers have their own requirements that usually mean you have to pay return shipping costs - and that's assuming they accept returns in the first place.

Walmart is a good choice for an average Playhouse, especially the plastic kinds that you won't find with retailers that specialize in higher-end, all-wood models. You'll know exactly what you're getting, and you'll have plenty of choices for delivery and returns if needed - and you may even be able to see the Playhouse of your choice in store before you place your order.

Continued from above

When choosing the right Playhouse for your favorite children, you want to be sure that you're getting a product that meets your needs. Keep a careful eye on the brand's reputation, the quality of the materials used, and any options for professional assembly when appropriate.

From budget to features, there really are endless options for Playhouses. How can you tell if a retailer is the best choice for your purchase? Here are several factors to guide your shopping decision:

  • Quality. Are the materials for the playhouse as sturdy as you would expect for the price. For example, no one would expect a cardboard Playhouse to hold up in the rain, but a Victorian mansion-style Playhouse should be well-constructed (and probably waterproof!).
  • Reputation. What do other customers have to say about the retailer and its Playhouses? Are there reviews of each available model on the site? Is the company rated by the Better Business Bureau?
  • Cost. When compared with similar styles of Playhouses, is the business competitively priced? Whether you're spending $200 or $20,000 for your Playhouse, you want it to be at the best possible price.
  • Return Policy. If something isn't quite right, can you return your Playhouse? Are there return shipping costs to consider? Is there a satisfaction guarantee in place?
