Cost:

Starting from $19.99

When it comes to Playhouses, Walmart offers about what you'd expect: nothing too expensive or fancy, a wide range of options (just over 200 in total), and the ability to pick up in store on some products.

The most affordable Playhouses sold by Walmart tend to be made of cardboard: castles, cottages, lemonade stands and so on, usually black and white so that kids can color them in. These sell for anywhere from $19.99 to over $70.

In the middle of the pack are the plastic Playhouses. Made by familiar brands like Step2 and Little Tikes, you've got cottages for $99 and up, more deluxe models with slides and sandboxes for up to $722, and several other designs.

Finally, in the wooden Playhouse inventory, you find the designs that have even more features like climbing walls and swings, priced from the mid-$200s up to a few deluxe models like the Pennfield Playhouse DIY Kit for over $3000. The higher-end Playhouses sold by Walmart tend to be offered by third-party sellers, and many of them were out of stock during our most recent shopping trip to the website.

Of course, one of the advantages of buying a Playhouse from a well-known retailer like Walmart is the ability to see some models in-store, pick up in person, or even get free delivery (either to your home or to your local brick-and-mortar location). This doesn't always apply when it comes to third-party sellers, so be sure to look for the part that says "Sold and shipped by" in the product description. While Walmart has a solid return policy that lets you bring you Playhouse back to a retail location, third-party sellers have their own requirements that usually mean you have to pay return shipping costs - and that's assuming they accept returns in the first place.

Walmart is a good choice for an average Playhouse, especially the plastic kinds that you won't find with retailers that specialize in higher-end, all-wood models. You'll know exactly what you're getting, and you'll have plenty of choices for delivery and returns if needed - and you may even be able to see the Playhouse of your choice in store before you place your order.

Cost:

Starting from $349

Headquartered in Virginia, Posh Tots has the ultimate selection of high-end Playhouses for parents (and grandparents) who want their children to have detailed castles, mansions, and villas that look like pint-sized versions of the real thing. In business for over a decade, Posh Tots has been the darling of celebrity families and others around the world, and the company remains committed to top-notch craftsmanship and quality in every Playhouse they offer.

Let's put it out there right away: you won't find a cheap plastic Playhouse on Posh Tots. On the lowest end of the price spectrum, you'll find several options for $349:

  • Beach Home Playhouse
  • Butterfly Garden Play Tent
  • Fairy Cottage Play Tent
  • Gingerbread Cottage Play Tent
  • Toy Shop Play Tent

Each of these models is 100% canvas, probably better suited for indoor play than for outside use. Be sure to look at the "We Also Suggest" section for cute suggestions for accessories and other items that match, like a floor quilt or bean bag.

On the other end of the price range, you'll find gigantic models that you might see at a public playground. Some of the options include:

  • Tumble Outpost: for the price of a small home ($122, 730), you get a swinging bridge, lookout tower, double rock climbing wall, clubhouse and more.
  • Red Beard's Revenge Pirate Ship: if $52,000 sounds like a reasonable price for playing pirate, this could be the perfect Playhouse for you. Captain's quarters with room for 3, upper and lower decks and a crow's nest are just a few of the features that make this model a delight.

There are also several models that require you to call for pricing, like the Princess Ballerina Castle Bed and the Custom Home Replica Playhouse.

During our most recent visit to the site, we got a discount offer in the live chat box that popped up. The coupon codes gave us a discount of 15% off a purchase of at least $750, or 20% off $2,000+.

Unfortunately, since the last time we evaluated Posh Tots, we've found several factors that caused their ranking to drop. First, the site itself isn't secure. When we reached out to the company via live chat (and got a very quick response, to their credit), we were told that it was being fixed. But, would you want to enter your credit card information to purchase the $24,900 Dream Tree Loft Playhouse if you weren't sure your information would be safe?

Then, we discovered that the company's BBB listing was being updated. That might not mean anything, but we didn't feel secure knowing that something needed to be changed there that could have a negative impact.

Most importantly, however, we found a significant number of customer complaints about Posh Tot's customer service. Orders consisting of thousands of dollars went undelivered, with no updates or explanations. The complaints seemed to revolve around higher-end, large items - just like Playhouses.

For all of these reasons, Posh Tots doesn't earn our highest recommendation for your next Playhouse. If you're looking for a top-notch, designer-quality structure for your children, you'll find several other options in our review that are backed by companies with a strong reputation for customer service.

Continued from above

When choosing the right Playhouse for your favorite children, you want to be sure that you're getting a product that meets your needs. Keep a careful eye on the brand's reputation, the quality of the materials used, and any options for professional assembly when appropriate.

From budget to features, there really are endless options for Playhouses. How can you tell if a retailer is the best choice for your purchase? Here are several factors to guide your shopping decision:

  • Quality. Are the materials for the playhouse as sturdy as you would expect for the price. For example, no one would expect a cardboard Playhouse to hold up in the rain, but a Victorian mansion-style Playhouse should be well-constructed (and probably waterproof!).
  • Reputation. What do other customers have to say about the retailer and its Playhouses? Are there reviews of each available model on the site? Is the company rated by the Better Business Bureau?
  • Cost. When compared with similar styles of Playhouses, is the business competitively priced? Whether you're spending $200 or $20,000 for your Playhouse, you want it to be at the best possible price.
  • Return Policy. If something isn't quite right, can you return your Playhouse? Are there return shipping costs to consider? Is there a satisfaction guarantee in place?
