Which online service offers the best prenuptial agreements? We know what you're thinking: if you're really in love, a prenup isn't necessary. Right? While we wish we could agree with you, the numbers don't lie: with more than 50% of marriages ending in divorce, and many of those under hostile conditions, it's no wonder that so many people take legal measures to protect themselves...just in case.

And, while some people mistakenly think that a prenuptial agreement is only required when one or both people have a high net worth - think Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg, Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake, or Kim Kardashian and Kanye West (who even wrote a song that highlighted the need of a prenup!) - that's just not the case.

NOLO

Cost:

$24.49 for downloadable eBook

$27.99 for eBook + printed book

Nolo is definitely no newcomer when it comes to providing resources for creating legal documents. In business for almost five decades, the company has sold nearly two million books and other products and utilizes a network of more than 30,000 local lawyers.

Just a book

What does Nolo offer when it comes to drafting a prenuptial agreement? Instead of finding a step-by-step questionnaire that walks you through everything you may or may not want to include, you'll get... a book. Currently in its 6th edition, "Prenuptial Agreements: How to Write a Fair & Lasting Contract" promises to help you "plan today for peace of mind tomorrow".

Printable worksheets

Nolo shows you exactly what to expect from this book: from a complete table of contents to a sample chapter, there will be no surprises if you decide to download the eBook ($24.49) or get the eBook/printed book combo ($27.99). The forms included with the book will give you worksheets to help calculate your financial outlook, analyze your credit history and spending habits, and more.

Cumbersome process

We weren't super-impressed to hear that "This book comes with a website". Really, isn't that kind of the point? To not have a website would be, well, rather 1990's of Nolo. All of the forms that come with the book are accessible online; the URL is in the first appendix of the book. And, if there are any updates to the information in the book, updates get posted to that website. That's great - but the other online services offering prenuptial agreements do that as an inherent part of what they offer; it's not something you have to go and look for (if you happen to remember to do it).

Check with a lawyer

It also seems important to point out that, with this prenuptial agreement resource, Nolo is expecting that you and your future spouse will both work with a lawyer during the process. This is largely due to the fact that the book only offers general information on each state's laws; without the input of a lawyer, you may not wind up with a document that is actually clear and binding. Compare that with the higher-ranked services in our review, which have been designed to address those state-specific ins-and-outs, and it's easy to see that Nolo comes up short in this arena too.

Pale in comparison

Nolo was a great resource when DIY legal forms first became a thing. The company has a long reputation and not too many customer complaints. However, when you look at what you can get from other online providers of prenups, Nolo's services pale in comparison. We're relatively certain you'll have a smoother experience with another provider - and with several of them giving you free access to document creation, it'll definitely be less expensive.

Cost:

Package cost varies by state

Average price - about $50 for digital download, $68 for print copy

US Legal Forms offers document packages for a variety of legal situations. The company has been in business for over 20 years.

Document packages

This service specializes in packages of documents specific to the state you live in. The price may vary depending on where you live and how complicated the documents need to be to address any legal issues particular to that state. Once you've selected your state of residence, you'll be taken to the package that applies to you.

What you get

What do you get when buying a document package from US Legal Forms? Again, the specifics depend on where you live, but generally speaking you can expect to get documents that include something similar to this:

  • Prenuptial Agreement without Financial Statements
  • Amendment to Prenuptial or Premarital Agreement
  • Financial Statements only in Connection with Prenuptial Premarital Agreement
  • Revocation of Premarital or Prenuptial Agreement

Limited preview

In the tabs shown on the package page, you can see a free preview of the premarital agreement forms for your state - but only the first few introductory pages. It wasn't enough to see even one page of what would actually be filled in during the process of drafting a prenuptial agreement. We would have liked to see much more information.

Doesn't come cheap

And, these packages don't come cheap. As an example, in one state we researched you'll pay $50.96 for an instant download, or $67.96 for US Legal Forms to mail you a paper copy. The company offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Hard to justify

While we appreciate the good reputation held by this company - including an "A+" grade at the BBB and many positive customer comments - the prenuptial agreement services they offer just can't hold a candle to what you'll find with our higher-ranked providers. It's hard to see why anyone would spend $50+ to download a book and some forms, when other services let customers enter all of their details online and even print out a finalized prenuptial agreement - for free. For these reasons, US Legal Forms winds up towards the bottom of our rankings.

Continued from above

Having a prenuptial agreement can offer peace of mind and security when there are children from previous marriages involved, business assets, or even large amounts of debt incurred prior to the wedding (like student loans). Even though it's not the most romantic of topics, having a calm discussion of the "what ifs" can actually strengthen your relationship.

Fortunately, while drafting a prenuptial agreement is practically a necessity, spending a lot of money on an attorney is not. There are a number of reputable, easy-to-use services online that walk users through all of the applicable questions to draft a legal prenup in any state of residence. Why spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars when the whole process can easily cost less than $80 from start to finish?

Of course, not every site that offers to help you draft a prenup will give you the same level of service. How can you tell which one is the best option for you? Here are several criteria to keep in mind as you select the provider for your prenuptial agreement:

  • Online Form or Download/Print. The easiest, most efficient way to get your document completed is with a website that offers a fillable form. However, some services will sell you a book, either a paper copy or digital, and you'll have to read through and understand all the material.
  • Ease of Use. Assuming you go with an online service, how straightforward is it to enter your specific details. If you wind up with questions along the way, how quickly can you get answers? How easily can you go back and make edits if needed - and for how long will you have online access to your document?
  • Price. What will you spend to get a completed prenuptial agreement? Will you have to pay for a subscription plan that you may not need?
  • Reputation. What do other customers say about their experience with the service? Are company representatives helpful or do they make life difficult if you have a problem, a billing dispute, or a refund request? Has the provider been rated by the BBB?

TopConsumerReviews.com has reviewed and ranked the best prenuptial agreement providers available today. We hope this information helps you determine the right service to get your prenup in place - just in time for your (hopefully) happily ever after.
