Do you want to transform the look and feel of a room or patio in just one easy step? Consider buying a rug! Whether you're looking to add some style to your deck or to make your hardwood floors warmer in the colder months, a rug will help you add color and comfort to any space.

The first step in choosing the right rug is to take an accurate measurement of the floor you want to cover, especially if you're shopping for an area rug. Home decor experts state that one of the most common mistakes people make is to purchase a rug that is too small - known as "postage-stamp" sizing.

RUG EXPEDITION

RUG EXPEDITION Visit Site

Based in San Antonio, family owned-and-operated Rug Expedition is a solid choice for buying a rug. Their selection is impressive, with over 100,000 rugs to choose from on their well-designed website.

Start at the top of the page to browse by style, size, shape, color, or material. You can also go directly to the links on the left side, to see Area Rugs, budget-friendly options at $99 or less, even clearance items to save even more.

We did notice several products with no available image, which would make it difficult to know if the color pattern was a good match for a room's decor. But, on the many rugs that did have images, it was really easy to zoom in for a better look at a particular pattern, or to see other rugs in the same collection. Make sure to use the dropdown box under the rug name and brand in order to choose the right size for your room, and the dropdown box under the price will allow you to select the rug pad for that size too.

Like most of their competitors, Rug Expedition offers a pop-up discount for signing up for their email list. However, the amount of the discount wasn't specified in advance, leaving us wishing we didn't have to give them our information just to find out how much we might save. But, with free shipping on all orders (even small ones) within the continental United States, you will save money over other retailers that only offer that perk with larger purchases.

One impressive benefit offered by Rug Expedition is their free 30-day in-home trial. If you're not satisfied with your rug for any reason, you can return it for a full refund with no restocking fees. As they put it, "We will help you find your perfect rug. Together, we can make every room feel like home." Their customer service representatives are available via toll-free number or live chat on the website during normal business hours Monday-Friday and can help you with the return process - or with the shopping and selection process too.

Rug Expedition has a good reputation as a business. With an "A" rating at the Better Business Bureau at the time of our review, and numerous compliments from customers praising quick delivery and high-quality rugs, you can be confident that your experience with Rug Expedition will likely be a good one.

Natural Area Rugs

NATURAL AREA RUGS Visit Site

As the name suggests, Natural Area Rugs specializes in carpets and floor coverings made from plant or animal fibers: sisal, wool, jute, and seagrass, to name a few. These eco-friendly materials can help prevent allergies related to synthetic materials, in addition to being more durable and easier to maintain.

Natural Area Rugs is one of the few retailers that offers custom products. If you have an area to cover that goes beyond the three standard sizes available in most stores, Natural Area Rugs will work with you to create the ideal rug for your space. These custom-made rugs are available in sisal, seagrass or mountain grass, or wool.

If you'd like to get a better idea of how the various natural fiber weaves look and feel, you can get up to five free samples - including sisal, seagrass, and mountain grass. Especially if you are placing a custom order, this is a great way to familiarize yourself with the materials you are considering for your home prior to placing an order.

At the time of our review, there was a pop-up offering a $25 discount on all first-time orders, in exchange for signing up for Natural Area Rugs' email newsletter. We also saw a 15% discount offer on the main page; unfortunately, the small print said that the coupon had actually expired almost two weeks earlier.

Shipping is free within the lower 48 United States.

Natural Area Rugs does allow for returns within the first 30 days, though they don't specify whether that's within 30 days of ordering or delivery. Be aware that there are no returns allowed for any custom rugs or stair treads, wall-to-wall, remnants, or closeout items. Customers are responsible for paying the return shipping costs as well.

Customer satisfaction with Natural Area Rugs' products and customer service varies widely. On the one hand, we found a number of shoppers who wound up loving the rugs they got for their home and who had great things to say about the overall buying experience. However, we also found an equal number of comments that complained about strong odors (above and beyond what one would expect from rugs made of natural fibers) and lack of durability. We would have liked to see a rating with the Better Business Bureau, to get a clearer idea of Natural Area Rugs' track record.

We liked the fact that Natural Area Rugs customers can get a custom-made rug, and that the retailer offers materials that are eco-friendly. This rating would easily improve with a more established track record of customer satisfaction, such as accreditation and rating with the BBB.

Continued from above

Area rugs generally come in three standard sizes - 9' x 12', 8' x 10', and 6' x 9', and you should aim to have between 4-6 inches of bare floor on each side.Of course, if your room needs a size that doesn't fall within those standard measurements, you may want to have a rug custom-made to meet your needs. You should expect to pay a little more than you would for a mass-produced floor covering, but it may be worth it to get the exact size, materials, and color scheme that will be the perfect match for your home.

The next decision should be the texture of your rug. For an outdoor space, you'll be looking at more durable materials like sisal or jute, while an indoor rug usually will be made of a softer material like wool or silk. You'll also want to keep in mind the amount of traffic your rug will get, and choose a material and texture accordingly. For example, while a silk rug is incredibly soft and gorgeous to look at, it is also notoriously difficult to clean and might not be the best choice for an area frequently used by pets or small children.

Finally, decide what color and/or pattern will convey the look you want. In a room primarily decorated in neutral colors, a rug with a bold color or design can add interest and flair, while an eclectically-furnished space can be toned down and pulled together by a solid-color rug. Another interior decorating tip to consider is layering rugs: adding warmth and comfort when it's colder out and making for an easy change in look when spring and summer return.

Once you have an idea of the rug you're looking for, shopping online will make it easier than ever to find it - and at prices that are often much lower than what you'd pay at a local retailer. As you decide which online store should get your business, keep in mind these criteria:

  • Selection. Does the store carry a variety of rugs in different patterns, colors, sizes, and materials?
  • Cost. Are the prices competitive with other retailers? Does the store offer any perks like discounts on your first purchase or free shipping?
  • Reputation. Have other customers had a good shopping experience?
  • Customer Service. What is the retailer's policy regarding returns? Is there a satisfaction guarantee in place? If you need help, are you likely to get a customer representative that is friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable?
