A critical component of well-being is a good night's rest. There are many factors that can cause a person to sleep poorly, including stress, uncomfortable mattresses and bedding, and room temperatures that are too hot or cold.

However, the most common source of sleep disruption is snoring, which affects both the individual who experiences it as well as anyone else sharing the room. This annoying condition prevents many people from getting the recommended 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night. According to the National Sleep Foundation, snoring impacts nearly 90 million adults in America alone.

Vital Sleep

Product Type:

Mouthpiece

Cost:

$59.95 ($99.95 for 2-pack)

TopConsumerReviews.com Best-In-Class Blue Ribbon Award VitalSleep is one of the most customizable stop snoring mouthpiece appliances available on the market. Known as a "mandibular advancement device" or MAD, the VitalSleep aims to prevent snoring by moving the lower jaw forward and thus open the sleeper's airway. It comes in two different sizes (men's and women's), and individual devices are made unique to the user using a "boil and bite" process to create a custom fit. Individuals can also turn two small plastic screws to make micro-adjustments for even greater comfort and ease of use.

The VitalSleep site features testimonials from many satisfied customers—and even some who were appreciative of the attention received even though the product didn't meet their needs. Where VitalSleep seems to really impress its customers is exactly that: its customer service. With free size exchanges, free replacements for one full year (which is ideal for those who may also grind their teeth while sleeping), and a 30-day money back guarantee, prospective customers can rest assured that VitalSleep will do everything possible to ensure the best chance at success with its mouthpiece.

Pricing on the VitalSleep is competitive with similar devices available at $59.95 (or $99.95 for a two-pack). Shipping is slightly higher at $7.95 than many other companies' products but still in the range we would consider reasonable.

Not every person who suffers from snoring will be able to comfortably tolerate a mouthpiece, but for those customers who can—or who would at least be willing to make the attempt—VitalSleep provides a nearly risk-free method to stop snoring. With attention to customer service and very satisfied users, VitalSleep earns our top ranking.

Air Snore

AIR SNORE Visit Site

Product Type:

Mouthpiece/Topical Drops

Cost:

$49.95 for the AirSnore Mouthpiece

$59.95 for AirSnore Drops

$$89.95 for the Mouthpiece and Drops Combo

There are two primary causes of snoring - airway obstruction due to throat relaxation or from congestion resulting from colds and other illnesses - and AirSnore targets both. Their products include the AirSnore Mouthpiece, which shifts the position of the jaw to maintain an open airway, and AirSnore Drops, which use essential oils such as eucalyptus, lavender, and peppermint to reduce congestion and ease breathing when applied topically to the neck, chest, and under the nostrils.

While all stop snoring devices that include a mouthpiece may run the risk of being uncomfortable, the AirSnore mouthpiece is moldable: soak it in warm water and bite down, and the device molds to the shape of your mouth. And, with essential oils being so popular, it's no surprise that the AirSnore drops use a blend that is well-known for helping with breathing and congestion.

Pricing for the AirSnore system is reasonable: $49.95 for the mouthpiece, $59.95 for the drops, or the more economical Combo package that includes both for $89.95. Also, AirSnore offers a 60-day money back guarantee if requested within 60 days of purchase. Customers do have to return any empty bottles within 67 days of order receipt.

In fact, that return-by-67-days detail was the first of several that made us wonder about the reliability of AirSnore's customer service. When we tried to use the live chat feature to ask a question, we were never connected with a representative; after several minutes of waiting, the chat box went blank. Turning to the “Contact Us” page, we were directed to a "toll-free" number that was located in the UK; when we used the number at the top of the page, one with a New York state area code, the ring tone we got was what we typically hear when placing calls overseas.

When we went to look for more information about the company, we found a very generic description: "AirSnore is manufactured and supplied by a trusted name that has been a leader in the supplements industry for over a decade." The site does not provide the name of the manufacturer, nor an address.

In short, the AirSnore system may be highly effective for helping with snoring - but with unreliable company information, difficulties in reaching their customer service department, and zero available reviews from satisfied (or unsatisfied) users, we have a hard time giving AirSnore our full recommendation.

What causes snoring? In general, as a person drifts off and moves from a light sleep into a deeper sleep, the muscles in the tongue, throat, and roof of the mouth relax; as the tissues in the throat relax, they can partly obstruct the person's airway and vibrate, causing the sound commonly associated with snoring.

While some people who snore wind up with a medical device known as a CPAP machine to help them breathe better, not everyone needs - or can afford - an expensive solution that can only be obtained with a doctor's prescription. Fortunately, there is a wide range of products available that can address snoring, from throat sprays to oral appliances designed to maintain one’s airway free from obstruction.

When evaluating the various products designed to stop snoring, you should consider the following aspects:

  • Type of application. Does the product appropriately address what you believe to be the cause of your snoring? For example, a spray designed to reduce inflammation in the throat would be ineffective if your problem stems from your jaw relaxing while you sleep.
  • Comfort. Does the product allow you to sleep in the way that you are most comfortable in bed? Would you be able to sleep with the product in place (e.g. a strap over the top of your head or a mouthpiece)?
  • Cost. Is the cost of the product competitive with other snoring solutions?
  • Effectiveness. Does the product actually stop snoring? Have other people experienced relief with the product, or is it largely untested or—even worse—ineffective.
