HABITROL

Habitrol is a patch that is placed on the skin so that nicotine is absorbed through the body at a slower rate than cigarettes without all of the harmful chemicals. Patches are worn for up to 24 hours before replacing. The nicotine in the patch is effective at stopping nicotine cravings and lessen physical symptoms caused by cigarette withdrawal. Like other patches, Habitrol has become popular because of its effectiveness, affordability and convenience.

Habitrol offers plans for heavy smokers and light smokers. This is determined based on how many cigarettes you smoke a day. If you smoke more than 10 cigarettes a day you are considered a heavy smoker and will use the program that has 3 steps. If you smoke less than 10 cigarettes a day you are considered a light smoker and will use the program that has 2 steps. The amount of nicotine that is delivered to your system is based on which step you are currently in. As you move through the program the amount of nicotine in your patch will decrease, weaning your body from the nicotine addiction.

For Heavy Smokers (those who moke more than 10 cigarettes a day) an 8-week program suggested -

  • Step 1 - 21mg - use this patch for weeks 1-4
  • Step 2 - 14mg - use this patch for weeks 5-6
  • Step 3 - 7mg - use this patch for weeks 7-8

For Light Smokers (those who smoke less than 10 cigarettes a day) an 8-week program suggested -

  • Step 1 - 14mg - use this patch for weeks 1-6
  • Step 2 - 7mg - use this patch for weeks 7-8

Habitrol offers an online Take Control support program hotline where someone is available to guide and encourage you through the program. They have an online calendar where you can set goals to keep you motivated.

Habitrol costs approx. $36 for 14 patches for step 1, 2 or 3. If you are not fully satisfied with Habitrol you can return within 30 days with the original receipt.

As with other patches, consumers can have a skin irritation to the nicotine patch. We found that Habitrol showed more occurrences of skin irritations and patches falling off. Some severe enough they had to stop using the product. Based on customer feedback, Habitrol seems like an effective and affordable way to quit smoking.

NICORETTE

Nicorette is gum that contains nicotine and is used as a stop smoking aid. Nicorette provides low levels of nicotine to the user to help curb cravings and withdrawal symptoms that can occur when you stop smoking. It's especially useful for those times when someone has become a habitual smoker - like when they are driving to work, drinking a cup of coffee, reading the newspaper, an evening out with friends. Habits are hard to break! Pop in a piece of gum and try your best to break these smoking habits!

Nicorette comes in many different flavors and two different strengths - 4mg and 2mg of nicotine. If you smoke within 30 minutes of waking up - you should start with 4mg. If you tend to smoke after 30 minutes of waking - you should start with the 2mg. Nicorette recommends using the gum for 12 weeks. The first 6 weeks you should chew a piece of gum every 1-2 hours, approx. 9 pieces a day. Weeks 7-9 you should chew a piece every 2-4 hours as needed. Weeks 10-12 you should chew a piece of gum every 4-8 hours, again as needed. The goal is to slowly reduce your dependency on nicotine. As you slowly stop smoking cigarettes you need to keep in mind that Nicorette has nicotine and should not be used for a long period of time.

For Nicorette to work you must chew it a certain way which is outlined in their instructions. Chew twice, wait for a tingle, then move the gum in between the cheek and gums. Continually do this process for about 30 minutes for the slow delivery of the nicotine into your system. Do not eat or drink 15 minutes before chewing the gum or while you are chewing the gum. Their website offers great instructional videos on how to use Nicorette and answers many additional questions about the gum. Nicorette, like Nicoderm CQ, offers an online support hub and app to help people quit smoking.

The use of Nicorette has varied levels of success. Some users were able to curb their cravings for cigarettes but ended up having other side effects from the gum. Side effects included - weight gain, anxiety, headaches, drowsiness, etc. Some users enjoyed Nicorette but noticed that it did not diminish all cigarette cravings. Some disliked the taste of Nicorette all together. Nicorette is meant to be taken alone. Users are not supposed to smoke cigarettes while also taking Nicorette. Nicorette is a great tool to help with withdrawal symptoms and cravings associated with smoking cessation. Nicorette is not meant to be used longer than 12 weeks.
