PREPARE WISE

PrepareWise is passionate about helping individuals and families get the survival gear they need, "cheaply and wisely". Their primary product is the Legacy Premium brand of food storage, which has won several awards for the best-tasting long-term food in the industry. PrepareWise is so confident in the Legacy Premium product that they also offer a guaranteed low price on the entire line of food storage items. Even on non-food products, their prices were very competitive with other retailers.

Another way that PrepareWise saves you money is by offering free shipping on all orders within the continental United States. This is the most generous policy among all of the survival gear businesses we reviewed. And, on the right-hand side of the page, we saw a changing set of images that promised a free gift with orders over $400, $1,000, and $2,500.

The website is easy to use: you simply select among the categories of Survival Food, Survival Gear, Water, and Fuel & Energy to browse what PrepareWise has to offer. Alternatively, you can go directly to the search box if you already have an idea of what you need. If you're still trying to figure out what to buy, you can click on the links for their helpful guides. For example, on the main Emergency Gear & Survival Kits page, you'll find that link underneath the images of survival kits, bug-out kits, and miscellaneous gear. That guide clearly describes the differences between survival kits, bug-out kits, and bug-in kits, with the goals of each product and a good explanation of why you might want to have one (or all) of them.

We were very impressed with PrepareWise's "A+" rating as an accredited business with the Better Business Bureau, along with a perfect five-star average rating out of more than 2,000 customer reviews. Customers rave about the excellent customer service, high-quality products, and the ease with which they were able to find and purchase the survival gear they needed.

It's no surprise that PrepareWise earns our first-place ranking among retailers of survival gear, and we give them a perfect five-star rating. We're confident that your shopping experience will be terrific.

EMERGENCY ESSENTIALS

Emergency Essentials lives up to its name. Several five-star reviews posted to the site praise them for their "low-price guarantee", meaning if you find a lower price within 30-days of your purchase, they will match the price. We were very impressed by the reviews we found praising this site for its competitive pricing and excellent service.

The company specializes in emergency preparedness, offering peace of mind for anyone who wants to plan accordingly for any unexpected event. Here are the main items offered on this online store:

  • Food
  • Water and storage
  • Meal ready to eat (MRE)
  • Gear
  • Survival kits

By simply clicking on a category, a customer can find out all items available. For example, the site breaks down what kinds of MREs one can buy, such as entrees, snacks, and combo packs.

What sets Emergency Essentials apart from other sites are the helpful guides. For example, if you don't know how to build your food storage, you can download an emergency preparedness list which will help you learn. You can also watch videos explaining why it is important to build a healthy inventory of emergency supplies.

The site also provides other helpful tools. Customers can find information on the following topics:

  • Recipes
  • Essential survival lists
  • Shelf life
  • Customizing your supplies
  • Tips on how to shop
  • Tips on how to store items

Regarding customer service, you can contact them via email, phone, or chat. Group orders have a minimum order requirement, but automatically qualify for free shipping. Individual orders, however, do have to pay for shipping, and customers from Hawaii and Alaska may be charged additional fees.

Overall, Emergency Essentials is very easy to navigate, and has a sporty vibe with bright colors such as the orange you might see emergency workers wearing. Unfortunately, we couldn't find any information about this company with the Better Business Bureau, and we did find a few reviews from customers who were disappointed with their experience. However, survival enthusiasts will enjoy shopping on this site. Those new to emergency preparedness will also find this site helpful and informative.

WISE

The Wise Company offers an extensive inventory of quality survival gear. They also offer several educational resources such as blogs and videos to learn more about their products. According to the Better Business Bureau, they have been in business for seven years and at the time of this review, held an A- rating.

A general search for survival gear will take you to a page focusing on food bundles and emergency backpacks. The majority of these items were at least $99.00, so we recommend perusing the site carefully if you're looking for a specific item. You can narrow your search by clicking on the following categories:

  • Long-term food kits
  • Emergency food kits
  • Meat, fruits, vegetables
  • Camping goods
  • Current deals
  • Powdered items

The site seems geared toward bulk sales. For example, we found specials organized by time frame such as food storage for 12 months. This might be a great option for the shopper who has the funds, but not the time, to build up a food supply.

Regarding customer service, you can contact The Wise Company via phone, email, or chat during business hours, which are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. New customers will appreciate this company's quality control efforts. For example, they list how their products are packaged and with what materials.

The site appropriately maintains a sporty, outdoor vibe. However, the site isn't well-organized. We had to do a search for both the return policy and customer service information (most sites list these categories on the bottom of the home page). Unless you're familiar with the company, be prepared to spend a lot of time looking for information.

Overall, we appreciate this company's transparency; we just wish it wasn't so hard to find what we were looking for. On the strength of their rating with the Better Business Bureau and frequent online specials, we give this online store average marks. We hope they will simplify the search process, especially for those new to emergency preparedness.

1 800 PREPARE

1 800 Prepare is a website that specializes in emergency preparedness products. This site has a very good selection of these products: including multiple types of survival kits, individual preparedness items, and C.E.RT. products.

The 1 800 Prepare website has a user friendly layout and appearance. Across the top of the site there are general use links like "For Your Home" and "For Your Car". Along the left side are the more specific links such as; "School Survival Kits", "Shelter" and "Warmth and Fire Safety".Clicking any of the specific links on the left takes you to a page showing all products within that category.

The return policy is pretty standard minus a steep restocking fee. Damaged or defective products will be fully refunded, and any product can be returned (except food/water items and potassium iodide products) within 30 days for a full refund less a 20% restocking fee. As far as we can tell there is not free shipping offers at 1 800 Prepare. We set up a mock order for over $600.00 and the cheapest option for shipping was over $65.00. That said, the other sites reviewed and rated higher have a much more customer friendly shipping policy.

While the 1 800 Prepare website does have a great selection of emergency preparedness supplies, it does not have any food supplies like the higher rated sites. That along with the poor shipping and return policies all contributed to the very average rating.

SURVIVAL FOOD

The Survival Food website specializes in selling food and food supplies. Carrying items such as emergency food buckets (long term survival food solutions) along with Rations & Survival Bars they sell emergency and survival food items for many different situations. They have a good variety of these products at reasonable prices.

The website for Survival Food has a professional appearance and set up. That along with the customer friendly product tabs on the top and left side of the home page makes this site easy to use. With these tabs you are able to search between different product types or even brand names.

Shipping and return policies at Survival Food are sub-par when compared to other sites. The shipping rates are not great. Orders less than $250.00 ship for a flat rate of $24.99 in the continental United States and orders over $250.00 will ship free of charge. The return policy seems decent but a little vague. 'Most' items can be returned within 15 days for a full refund. There is no explanation of what products fall out of the 'most' category. Also, there is no mention if there is or is not a restocking fee.

Just reading the name, Survival Food, you can tell what type of products this website specializes in. The food selection on this website is comparable to those rated higher but lacks the selection of emergency preparedness/survival products that we were looking for. Shipping was expensive and the return policy was less impressive.

QUAKE KARE

Quake Kare is a website that sells emergency preparedness products and a limited selection of emergency food products. This site also has some good emergency information and the latest disaster news.

Although the selection is not as thorough as other sites reviewed here, there are many useful emergency products sold on Quake Kare. Many different types of survival kits (home, office, school kits)and emergency kits (pandemic flu kits and hygiene kits) can be found by clicking the navigation links on the left side of the screen. Also, in the Emergency Supplies section, sanitation supplies and emergency food can be found among other things.

The website for Quake Kare is not as easily navigated as other sites and some information is difficult to find. During the purchase process we found the shipping costs to be expensive and no order size resulted in free. Quake Kare does offer a solid return policy. A full refund of the purchase price is available for items returned within 30 days and with no restocking fees.

The selection of products at Quake Kare is limited and the website itself is not as user friendly as the others reviewed. Those factors combined with the shipping rates being above normal, caused this site to receive our lowest rating in this category. If you are looking for survival gear products we recommend you shop a much higher ranked company.

Survival Gear

If you plan on traversing rough mountain terrain on your next vacation, or want to prepare for a natural disaster, finding the right survival equipment can be a big challenge.

Earthquakes, tornadoes, ice storms, and hurricanes can leave you in the dark and cause you to leave your home, with nowhere to go. Or, you could be stuck at your residence with little or no access to food, water, and electricity. Similarly, roughing it in the mountains can be a lot of fun - but having the proper emergency supplies is key to preparing for any situation that could occur. It could be life or death.

Trying to find affordable survival gear and emergency preparedness products in most local areas can be a frustrating experience. Thankfully there are online companies that provide a wide selection of survival products to save you time and money.

Before making your next purchase of survival gear, packaged food, or bottled water, consider the following:

  • Selection. Does the company offer a wide selection of survival gear and emergency preparedness products? Or will you have to shop various companies to find everything you need?
  • Shipping. Survival gear can be heavy. What does the survival company charge for shipping, and how does that compare to other providers?
  • Return policy. Does the survival gear company enable you to return products if you aren't satisfied? If so, does that involve a restocking fee?

TopConsumerReviews.com has reviewed and ranked the best survival gear stores available today. We hope these reviews help you meet all of your emergency preparedness and survival gear needs!
