SUNNY'S HAIR & WIGS

Cost:

From $45 to $640

Started more than two decades ago by a Minneapolis father who saw first-hand how difficult it could be for his four daughters to get quality hair products, Sunny's is now run by those daughters in three brick-and-mortar locations nationwide as well as online.

Despite the name, Sunny's Hair and Wigs only has three lace-style wigs, all with Indian hair; their primary product is hair extensions, with brands like Virgin, Le Privé, Bohyme, and Lord & Cliff. While this may deter customers looking for full wigs in a variety of colors, or who do not want to visit a colorist to alter the deeply dark hair of an Indian wig, Sunny's product selection with respect to extensions is quite broad both in color and length as well as style (for example, clip-in, tape-in, wefted, and pre-tipped).

While no specific shipping policy is listed, it appears that all orders are shipped free regardless of order size. They have a strict no refund policy on all purchases, with the exception of Indian Hair Extensions; however, because Sunny's understands that customers may be skeptical of online vendors or unsure that their wave pattern or colors will blend, they do allow returns within seven days if the binding has not been removed. Customers are responsible for return shipping costs.

We like Sunny's blog, with great ideas for caring for hair extensions as well as hair in general, style trends, and even recommendations for cleaning hair tools. This provides terrific information for shoppers of all hair types.

Although Sunny's Hair and Wigs will not meet the needs of most customers who specifically need full wigs, their easy-to-use website, free shipping, and wide variety of quality extensions make them a satisfactory retailer within the category.

Cost:

From $40-$300

Lace Wigs Buy is part of the IZIGET family of companies, which was the OEM factory of Raquel Welch and Revlon for 10 years. Their website is incredibly easy to use: customers can sort across a variety of characteristics, including cap construction, length, style, color, and price. There's also an entire section that can be browsed by celebrity, from Kim Kardashian and Eva Longoria to Beyoncé and Rihanna, with wigs listed to match those hairstyles. It's worth noting, though, that the actual wigs for those styles are not shown on that page, only photos of the celebs themselves. Customers can also create a custom wig, which can take up to 35 days to manufacture and ship.

This retailer has frequent sales and discounts, featured prominently at the top of the page, and shipping is free on orders over $100. Exchanges are also made for free, but the customer will have to pay return shipping on any exchanges after the first. Similarly, customers making returns will also pay return shipping costs to China of as much as $80, as well as a 30% restocking fee on unused products.

Unfortunately, many customers are deeply unsatisfied with Lace Wigs Buy's products. Their reviews indicate that there are serious issues with the quality of the wigs, often looking cheap or more like a costume than real hair, and not looking anything like what was depicted on the site. There are numerous complaints about the way customer service handles issues, such as offering a 10% discount on a future purchase to a shopper whose product was defective rather than providing a new wig. It would take a significant change in product quality and customer service to improve Lace Wigs Buy's current rating.

Not all wig retailers are the same. Before shopping for a new wig, you should consider the following factors:

  • Selection. How many wigs does the company offer? Do they sell both human hair wigs and synthetic wigs?
  • Price. Is the pricing for the wigs competitive with other wig retailers? What can you expect to pay for a quality wig?
  • Customer Service. Is the wig store geared towards the customer with a return policy, affordable shipping, and easy website navigation?
